For digital nomads & remote founders

Swap the coast for the countryside. Pay 12.5% company tax.

Make one of Portugal's interior towns your base, run your business from there, and your Portuguese company pays 12.5% corporate tax on its first €50,000 of profit — instead of 15%. We set it all up for you, 100% online.

Applies when your company's activity and management are genuinely based in one of the 165 municipalities or 73 parishes listed in Portaria 208/2017. Profit above €50,000 is taxed at 19%.

Why remote founders are looking inland

Lisbon and Porto are great — and crowded. Portugal's interior gives you the same EU company and the same time zone, at a lower cost of living — plus a tax break designed to bring businesses there.

Lower corporate tax

12.5% on your first €50,000 of profit under article 41.º-B of the Tax Benefits Statute.

A real EU company

A Portuguese Lda. with limited liability, a Portuguese bank account and a credible base for invoicing clients across Europe and beyond.

Lower living costs

Rent and day-to-day costs in interior towns are typically far below Lisbon and Porto levels.

Coworking built for it

Portugal has a public network of coworking spaces in interior towns, created to attract remote workers.

The honest fine print: is this for you?

The reduced rate isn't a mailbox trick. The Tax Authority requires your company's activity and effective management to be located in the interior — so it works for nomads who are ready to put down roots, not for perpetual travellers.

A great fit if you…

  • want to slow down and make an interior town your home base
  • freelance, consult or run an online business with clients anywhere
  • expect meaningful profit and want to keep more of it in the company
  • may hire locally — net new jobs are deductible at 120%
  • are an EU citizen, or have (or are getting) a Portuguese visa or residence permit

Not for you if you…

  • move country every few months and never really settle
  • only want a registered address in the interior while working elsewhere
  • plan to run the business day-to-day from Lisbon, Porto or abroad
  • expect the rate to apply to all your profit (it covers the first €50,000)

Questions nomads ask us

Not if you're always on the move. The reduced rate requires the company's activity and effective management to be located in an interior territory. You can travel, but the business has to be genuinely run from your base in the interior — that's where decisions are made, where you work most of the time and where the company's records show it operates.

No. 12.5% applies to the first €50,000 of taxable profit each year. Profit above that is taxed at the standard rate (19% in 2026). Dividends or salary you then pay yourself are taxed separately according to where you are personally tax resident.

No. A registered address alone does not qualify; the Portuguese Tax Authority looks at where the company actually operates and is managed. A rented room, office or coworking desk you really use — and living nearby — is what makes the benefit hold up.

In practice, yes: to manage the company from an interior territory you need to spend most of your working time there. Owning a Portuguese company does not by itself give non-EU citizens the right to live in Portugal, so you will also need a suitable visa or residence permit. EU/EEA citizens can move freely.

Yes. Any nationality can own and manage a Portuguese Lda. Every partner and manager needs a Portuguese NIF (tax number), which we can arrange.

The eligible areas are the 165 municipalities and 73 parishes listed in Portaria 208/2017, mostly in the north-east, the centre and the Alentejo. Tell us the town you have in mind and we will check the exact address before you register.
